Biochemistry Department
The Biochemistry Department was established with the creation of the National Health System (ESY) in 1982 as a scientifically independent department of the Hospital’s Laboratory Sector. It provides a large volume of tests on a daily basis, which are essential for the prognosis, diagnosis and treatment of patients.
Full training for medical residents in Medical Biopathology, 12 months.
Participation in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of NKUA.
Over 400 publications in PubMed and presentations at conferences.
Accredited according to ISO 15189:2022
By ESYD for 24 parameters in serum and 10 in urine, Certificate No. 857-5.
High quality is ensured through daily internal control and external quality assessment, EQAS BIORAD, INSTAND EV, ESEAP.

Glucose, Urea, Creatinine, Electrolytes, Liver enzymes (GOT, GPT, γ-GT), Bilirubin, Lipid profile, Lactic acid, etc.
Special Proteins
IL-6, Procalcitonin (PCT), Cystatin C, hs-CRP, Homocysteine, β2-Microglobulin, Ceruloplasmin, Urine albumin.
Medicines & Markers
Methotrexate, Salicylates, Tumour Markers (CEA, AFP, CA 125, etc.), Cardiac Function Markers (hs-TnT, NT-pro-BNP).
Inorganic Elements
Iron, Copper, Zinc in serum and urine.

Blood ammonia, Osmolality, Chemical analysis of urinary stones, Trypsin & faecal Calprotectin.
