2nd Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (2nd NICU)

The 2nd Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the “Agia Sophia” Children’s Hospital has been operating since 1974 and is one of the most specialised neonatal intensive care units in the country. It has 15 Neonatal Intensive Care beds, Level III, and 6 Neonatal High Dependency Care beds, providing comprehensive care for premature, extremely premature and high-risk newborns.

Clinical Work
  • Hospitalisation and intensive care of premature and extremely premature newborns
  • Management of newborns with complex organic, cardiological, respiratory and neurological problems
  • Postoperative care of surgical and cardiac surgical newborns
  • Management of metabolic diseases and congenital anomalies
  • Cooperation with all paediatric and surgical departments for the management of complex cases
  • Training of physicians subspecialising in Neonatology and participation in educational activities
Services Provided
  • Specialised Level III neonatal intensive care
  • Neonatal high dependency care during the discharge preparation stage
  • Respiratory support, including mechanical ventilation, CPAP, etc.
  • Continuous haemodynamic and metabolic monitoring
  • Imaging and laboratory examinations in accordance with protocols
  • Psychological support for parents
  • Parent training in newborn care

 Hospitalised Newborns (NICU)

  •   Prematurity and extreme prematurity
  •   Neonatal encephalopathy
  •   Surgical, cardiac surgical and thoracic surgical conditions
  •   Neurological and neurosurgical problems
  •   Orthopaedic, otorhinolaryngological and ophthalmological conditions
  •   Metabolic problems
  •   Congenital anomalies and genetic syndromes

 High Dependency Unit (HDU)

  •   Newborns with milder problems, ready for discharge preparation
  •   Newborns requiring short-term hospitalisation and monitoring
Human Milk Bank

Established in 1980, it supports premature and hospitalised newborns exclusively with human milk in the 2nd NICU, 1st NICU, HDU, Premature Infant Unit and other departments.

Long-Term Follow-up Outpatient Clinic

It follows up premature and high-risk newborns up to 4 years of age, with the aim of timely developmental and neurological intervention.

Transport Unit

Participation in ground transports within Attica, 15 days per month, alternating with the 1st NICU, and in air transports of newborns from across the country.

Research Activity

  • • Participation in multicentre research protocols
  • • Conduct of studies aimed at improving neonatal care
  • • Participation in the development of paediatric and neonatal protocols
Objective

For more than 40 years, the 2nd NICU has provided high-quality care to high-risk newborns. The Unit’s objective is to optimise newborns’ health and development during hospitalisation and after discharge, ensuring their safe return to the family environment.
