Intensive Care Unit (ICU / PICU)
The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the “Agia Sophia” Children’s Hospital has been operating since 1996 on the 4th floor and is the largest Paediatric ICU in the country. It is a multidisciplinary general unit with a capacity of 10 beds, ensuring the highest level of medical and nursing care for critically ill infants, children and adolescents.
- Hospitalisation of paediatric, surgical and oncology patients who require close monitoring or special treatments
- Use of all modern invasive and non-invasive diagnostic and monitoring methods, including haemodynamic monitoring, ultrasound examinations and intracranial pressure measurement
- Application of advanced techniques for supporting vital functions, including high-frequency ventilation, NAVA ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy and plasmapheresis
- Support for critically ill children in the Emergency Department and consultation for all clinics of the hospital
- Systematic training of paediatric residents, nursing students and physicians undergoing subspecialty training in Paediatric Intensive Care
- Research and scientific activity in the fields of Paediatrics and Intensive Care
The ICU provides 24-hour coverage, with two specialised physicians on active duty every day of the year. There is a defined schedule for parent updates and visits, access to psychological support, and direct communication whenever necessary.
The guiding principles in the operation of the Unit are the protection of children’s rights and support for the family. The aim is to provide high-quality care with respect, scientific excellence and humanity.
