Pathology Department

The Pathology Department of the “Agia Sophia” Children’s Hospital is one of the few specialised laboratories in Greece that deals exclusively with samples from newborns, children and adolescents. The staff’s expertise in the particular features of paediatric pathology ensures high diagnostic accuracy and effective cooperation with clinical physicians.

The aim of the Department is to provide high-level diagnostic accuracy and improve the care of children through direct and close cooperation with the attending physicians.

 

The Laboratory covers the needs of:
  • The two oncology clinics: the University Oncology–Haematology Unit / CETH and the Department of Paediatric Haematology–Oncology.
  • The Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit.
  • The “ELPIDA” Oncology Centre.

 

Services Provided
Histopathological examination and staging of surgical specimens.
Rapid biopsies during surgical procedures, including for aganglionic megacolon.
Immunohistochemical stains for paediatric lesions and determination of prognostic parameters.
In situ hybridisation method for the diagnosis of viral infections (EBV, CMV).
Histochemical stains for microorganisms, such as fungi and mycobacteria, deposits and trace elements, such as haemosiderin.
Diagnosis of fine-needle tumour biopsies, bone marrow biopsies, liver biopsies and skin biopsies.
Consultative opinions on histological diagnoses from other laboratories.
Archiving of histological slides and paraffin blocks.

* The Laboratory participates in European and international protocols concerning paediatric tumours of the kidney, brain, bones and soft tissues.
