The Specialized Center for Adolescent Medicine (S.C.A.M.) of the 1st Department of Pediatrics, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), at “Agia Sofia” Children’s Hospital, is a leading reference center for adolescent health in Greece.
In close collaboration with the UNESCO Chair on Adolescent Health and Medicine and the Choremeio Research Laboratory, the Center combines clinical services, research, and educational activities, contributing to the advancement of adolescent health at both national and international levels.
Objectives
- Provision of comprehensive healthcare services for adolescents with complex medical, psychological, or social needs.
- Promotion of Adolescent Medicine as a specialized scientific field.
- Strengthening research and disseminating its findings through international collaborations.
- Training healthcare professionals and raising public awareness of adolescent health issues.
Activities
The Center carries out a wide range of activities:
Specialized Clinics
Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology, Exercise Physiology & Sports Medicine, as well as a Learning Difficulties Assessment and Certification Unit.
Clinical Services
Provision of individualized care for adolescents, with emphasis on their physical, mental, and social well-being.
Research Programs
Participation in national and international projects focusing on obesity, mental health, learning difficulties, health promotion, telemedicine, as well as major European programs in Health Technology Assessment (HTA).
Educational Activities
Organization of conferences, seminars, and educational workshops for healthcare professionals and students.
Research Programs
The Specialized Center for Adolescent Medicine (S.C.A.M.) has participated in major national and international studies, including:
- Research on adolescent psychological development and psychopathology.
- Programs focusing on nutrition, obesity, and lifestyle among young people.
- European research projects (Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, EU4Health, IHI).
- Programs carried out in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health for the implementation of the European HTA Regulation.
Scientific Events
The Center and the UNESCO Chair have organized and co-organized numerous national and international conferences and scientific events on topics related to adolescent health, obesity prevention, mental health, and the training of healthcare professionals.

The Specialized Center for Adolescent Medicine (S.C.A.M.) operates within the 1st Department of Pediatrics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) at “Agia Sofia” Children’s Hospital. Services are provided by appointment and include specialized clinics, assessments, and support programs.
