Mission

The Pharmacy of the “Agia Sophia” General Children’s Hospital is a key pillar of hospital care. Its mission is the safe, effective and rational use of medicines, with the aim of providing the best possible care for children and supporting their families.

Main Responsibilities
  • Procurement, storage and safekeeping of pharmaceutical preparations.
  • Serving the clinics through scientific review and dispensing of individual prescriptions via the information system.
  • Procurement and distribution of IV fluids, antiseptics and alcohol to the clinics.
  • Management of automated medication storage and dispensing systems (PYXIS system).
  • Serving outpatients for specific categories of medicines and eligible beneficiaries.
  • Monitoring of storage conditions, such as temperature and humidity.
  • Management of special and rare medicines, such as anticancer medicines, biological agents and medicines for rare paediatric diseases.
Specialised Laboratories and Units

Compounded and Galenic Preparations

Preparation of personalised formulations in paediatric doses.

Parenteral Nutrition

Preparation of formulations for newborns, infants and children in a specialised environment with high safety standards.

Cytostatic Drug Reconstitution Unit

Preparation of solutions using closed systems, in accordance with international protocols.

Advisory Role

Pharmacists support medical and nursing staff by providing guidance on dosage, interactions, adverse effects and the proper use of medicines.

Support for Families

Parents are given instructions on the correct administration of medicines at home, safe storage and the prevention of medication errors.

Research and Education

  • Participation in clinical studies and early access protocols for new medicines.
  • Training of Pharmacy students and pharmacy assistant trainees.
Public Services / Services for the Public

Prescriptions are dispensed for special categories such as:

  • Growth hormone preparations
  • Medicines for haemophilia and Mediterranean anaemia
  • Special nutrition preparations
  • Antiretroviral medicines
