Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

The Neonatal Unit of the 1st Department of Pediatrics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens operates as a Level II Neonatal High Dependency Unit (NHDU). It has been in continuous operation for more than 40 years and has a capacity of 30 beds.
Each year, approximately 500–600 newborns—both preterm and full-term infants—are admitted to the Unit. Admissions take place either through the Hospital’s on-call services, following referrals from public and private maternity hospitals, or via transfer by the National Centre for Emergency Care (EKAB) as part of the Attica Neonatal Units network.
The Unit is located on the 5th floor of the main hospital building and includes renovated facilities, isolation rooms for infectious cases, areas for family information and breastfeeding, and is equipped with modern medical technology, including state-of-the-art incubators and resuscitation units, monitors with a central monitoring station, CFM equipment, CPAP and high-flow devices, hearing screening equipment (ABR, TEOAEs), a bilirubin meter, a PEAPOD body composition analyzer for newborns, and other specialized equipment.
Particular emphasis is placed on promoting breastfeeding, in cooperation with the Hospital’s Human Milk Bank, as well as on encouraging parents to actively participate in the care of their newborns.

Outpatient Clinic (Follow-up)
Following discharge, newborns are monitored through the regular outpatient follow-up clinic.
- Neurodevelopmental assessment is performed (e.g. using the Bayley Scales).
- A multidisciplinary approach is provided, involving a pediatric neurologist, physiotherapist, ophthalmologist, and other specialists, depending on each child’s needs.
Education and Research
The Unit serves as a training center in Neonatology for:
- Pediatric residents
- Medical and Nursing students of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA).
The team has extensive research activity focused on improving neonatal care. Its aim is to transfer knowledge and experience to the next generations of healthcare professionals, helping to ensure the provision of optimal care.
